A recruiter's first pass over a resume is short. Ladders' eye-tracking study, which recorded how recruiters read resumes on screen, put the initial scan at about 7.4 seconds before they decide whether to keep reading. The first word of every bullet does a disproportionate amount of work in that time.

That is the whole case for action verbs. "Responsible for projects" tells a reader what your job title already told them. "Led six cross-functional projects to on-time delivery" tells them what happened because you were there.

Below are 210 verbs in five categories, plus the part most verb lists skip: how to attach each one to a result.

What a strong bullet actually looks like

A verb on its own changes nothing. The pattern that works is verb + what + measurable outcome:

Three checks before you keep a bullet:

  1. Does it start with a verb in the past tense (present tense for your current role)?
  2. Does it say what changed, not what you were assigned?
  3. Is there a number, a scale, or a named outcome at the end?

If a bullet fails all three, it is a job description, not an achievement.

Mistakes to avoid

Repeating one verb. If eight of your bullets start with "Led", the ninth stops registering. Vary within a role, not just across roles.

Reaching for a thesaurus. "Spearheaded" for a task you did alone, or "Orchestrated" for scheduling two meetings, reads as inflation. Interviewers ask follow-up questions.

Verbs with no object. "Optimized processes" is not better than "Responsible for processes". Say which process and by how much.

Passive constructions. "Was involved in the migration" hides your role. "Migrated 40 services to Kubernetes" does not.

Vague openers. Assisted, Participated, Helped, Worked on, Involved in, Supported — these are the six words most worth deleting from a resume. If your contribution really was support, name the specific thing you supported and what it produced.

Before and after

Before

Marketing Manager | 2020-2023
- Responsible for social media campaigns
- Helped with team meetings
- Worked on improving customer satisfaction
- Assisted with budget planning

After

Marketing Manager — Northwind Retail (Feb 2020 – Nov 2023)
- Launched a paid-social program across four channels; engagement per post rose 45% in two quarters.
- Convened a weekly cross-team review that cut duplicated campaign spend by roughly €30k a year.
- Improved post-purchase CSAT from 3.6 to 4.3 by rewriting the six transactional email templates.
- Reallocated a €480k annual budget away from two underperforming channels with no drop in pipeline.

Same four responsibilities. The second version is readable, specific and searchable.

Put them to work

Pick your five weakest bullets, rewrite them with a verb from the list above and a number at the end, then rebuild the document on a single-column template. If you want the keyword side of the same problem, read resume keywords and how to extract ATS keywords from a job description.
